I FEAR
By
Mary Ellen Carmody
Oh, what color will we see this night
Will the Devil's Blue seek their due
And march where Grey has stood tall and true?
Oh, I worry, what color comes our way this night.
Oh, my love, will night bring Blue to burn our home
And leave the darkies free to roam.
For no man of Grey is here to save,
No man of strength and brave.
There's no one here to stop the ride
Of Yankees driven like ocean tide.
And now they come with rifles high
Oh, my dear, I fear the end is nigh.
I fear, my love, for our Southern Birth,
Oh, fight dear love for all you're worth
This sound of war, this sound of strife
This bloody contest, life for life.
For so many the end has come
And silenced there the beating drum.
I fear I will meet you after this day,
In a churchyard where I'll pray.
